If one looks at a record of the 'Teachings' of Bhagavan Sri Ramana
Maharshi one could divide the same into two categories. One that
is to be found in the oiginal works of Bhagavan, and the other which
is a record of his answers to the questions of seekers fom time
to time.If one is looking at the latter,it would be erroneous to
pick up any one answer to a given question or doubt and take it
to be the essential teaching of bhagavan. The answers would naturally
be specific to the context of the question. This is especially because
Bhagaan, being an indefatigably positive person, would never destroy
but only nurture and nourish.Hence, most often Sri Ramana would allow
the seeker to continue along already chosen lines. His gace would
lead to the direct path at the ripe time.It is in this context that
one may have to look at the phrase 'direct teaching'.One must look
at that teaching which repeatedly forms the core of Bhagavan's words, which
has been given by him time and time again in varied contexts, regardless
of the questioner.
