Preceptors of Advaita was originally brought out in the year 1967 on the occasion of the Diamond Jubilee of the ascension to the Sri Kamakoti Pitha by His Holiness Sri Chandrasekhara Saraswati,Sri Sankarachrya of Kanchi.Perhaps this was first such event after Sri Sankara Bhagavatpada the first exponent of Advaita Philosophy.
Advaita,which is the Plenary Experience,is not a system among the systems of philosophy or a cult among the cults of religion.It has been taught by great preceptors from time immemorial as the goal of all philosophical schools and religious persuasions.In the Book under description,there are articles contributed by various scholars on the Preceptors of Advaita belonging to the three periods into which the history of Advaita falls:(1).that of pre-Sankara teachers,beginning with Vasishta,(2).that of Sankara and his immediate disciples,and (3).that of post Sankara exponenets of Advaita.

Dr.T.M.P.Mahadevan took his Doctorate in Philosophy from the University of Madras and was a Professor in the same University.A prolific writer,his contributions include several Books on Hinduism (Outlines of Hinduism.He had also written a number of Books concerning the great sage Sri Ramana Maharshi.After retirement he took up the job as Director,Centre of Advanced Study in Philosophy,University of Madras.
